My Story

My love for jewelry and aesthetics began as a little girl. Choosing what I wore each day, how I went into the world became my first act of self love. The daily task of putting on my armor, in the form of pattern dresses, frilly skirts, polka dot tights, or shiny red boots, was when I learned that I could influence my emotions from within my own closet.

I spent hours upon hours stringing multicolor plastic beads on rubber wire, spelling out our family dog’s name with large cubes letter by letter. I would beg my Grandmother to take me on walks down the stinky Chicago alleys to look for “treasure.” Treasure by my six year old definition was a rusty washer, chipped piece of red brake lights, sparkly bit of broken glass, an old battery, or maybe, if I was lucky, a chalky glass bead. I would cup these such items in my hands, like precious gold, until they were too full to collect anything else, only then would I agree to return home with my loot.

Looking back, I have always had an eye for the forgotten, the broken, and the abandoned, seeing not what once was, but what now could be. My art as a child and my art today reflect my ability to turn something rusty into shiny once again.
